rsd 2016. Limited edition of 500. klangFarBe: German Democratic Republic Tape Music 1983-1987 is a compilation of tracks from Frank Bretschneider's legendary experimental new wave label klangFarBe, which Bretschneider ran from 1985 to 1989 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany (now known as Chemnitz). Bretschneider, who would go on to found the raster-noton label with Olaf Bender and Carsten Nicolai, established klangFarBe to make his music accessible to a small group of interested parties, eventually publishing eight releases in all. Due to the restrictive laws in the German Democratic Republic, where media was completely controlled by the government and any private publishing was actually illegal, it was only possible to publish releases in very limited editions. At first only known to a handful of specialists, the label soon became well known with the help of Lutz Schramm, host of the famous Parocktikum radio program on East Germany's DT 64 station. With the fall of the wall, Bretschneider gained new opportunities to publish his music in a more professional way, and closed down klangFarBe in 1989 after releasing its final cassette, Trickbeat by Bretschneider's new wave band AG. Geige. This collection includes tracks by Bretschneider, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle (Bretschneider and Fritz-Hendrik Melle), Stein im Brett (Bretschneider and Matthias Stein), and AG. Geige. Mastered by Frank Bretschneider. Graphic design by Alessandro Adriani.
