astral social club: magic smile

Neil Campbell has been around for a long time, hacking out sound from whatever comes to hand since the end of the 1970s. Between then and emerging in his current solo Astral Social Club incarnation he's played under too many names to remember, let alone list, but perhaps most notably as a core member of Vibracathedral Orchestra, The A Band and Iibiis Rooge, and in collaboration with people like Richard Youngs, Robert Horton, Dylan Nyoukis and Matthew Bower. Astral Social Club both continues and upends some of the obsessions apparent in his earlier work, with sustained tones evolving through a restless pulsing textural throb, electronically refracted, constantly on the verge of tipping over into outright chaos, always pushing forward. "Magic Smile" is the new pro-pop CD from Astral Social Club, with 7 shiny and splintered new tunes, plus a special remix by Japanese wonder boys Kufuki. These tunes range from the twisting 13 minutes of the opening "Rubber Lagg", through the succinct plainsong of the title track, to the full-on riot that is "FRWRKZ RWRK". In places it's utterly freewheeling and joyous, at others full of fire and anger. No stone is left unthrown. Everyone gets kissed. "Magic Smile" is his second Japanese CD release, following "Happy Horse" in 2010.
